Corruption in Nigeria is rampant; a recent World Bank survey found that around one third of Nigerian businesses paid a bribe during the last year whilst Nigeria was ranked 139 out of 176 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index for 2012. Practically no government contract or service is awarded without bribes being collected or given.
Corruption is one of the factors fuelling political violence and other forms of human rights abuses. Those who speak against the conduct of those who abuse their power have often been targets of violence or intimidation. Cases of grand corruption and fund embezzlement are being unveiled almost daily in Nigeria and officials who commit such abuses are rarely prosecuted, enjoying almost complete impunity.
Fight Corruption is a highly visible, evidence-based campaign that will expose various forms of corruption in Nigeria, beginning in the oil-rich Niger Delta, at the local, state and federal level. We aim to mobilise Nigerian citizens to actively challenge cases of corruption and abuse of power in Nigeria.
The NIDAN coalition is a Niger Delta based anti-corruption platform that brings together civil society and community groups together with lawyers and human rights activists, religious leaders and academics. Our goal is to address corruption in Nigeria by ensuring that basic human rights of the population are observed and upheld by the Government.
