Press conference
Where: Warri, Delta state
Why: The program was initially designed to be another peace rally in Warri town, but at the last moment it had to be converted to a press conference for security reasons. Women received an unidentified call warning them that an armed group could attempt to attack them during the peace march. It was too late to postpone the event and the media were already waiting for the event to start so the women decided to turn the peace march into a press conference. It was later discovered that the anonymous call was an attempt to frustrate the women and stop their action for peace.
Outcome: The Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre's leader, Emem J. Okon, gave a speech based on the message of the peace marches: ‘No to violence and intimidation, No to political killings, No to election rigging, No to all destructive acts, No to political thuggery’; Yes to ‘Peace and justice, politics of fair play, free and fair election, the development of Delta state, positive involvement of youths’.
This event showed that women in the Delta state are strong and organised groups and that they even have their effective ways of networking with the media.
