Women are one of the predominantly disadvantaged groups in communities in the Niger Delta. Various hindrances at the political, social and economic levels combine and reciprocally reinforce to propagate women’s discrimination and increase their vulnerability to violations of their rights.

It is important that women are developed into agents of change in order to contest conventional power dynamics and destabilise the confines of patriarchal culture. It is evident that empowering women within the community can allow them to build their capabilities in order to create better opportunities, thus granting them increased accountability over their destiny.
