'Building the Capacity of Women for Peace Action' training

What: ‘Building the Capacity of Women for Peace Action’ training
Where: Port Harcourt, Rivers state
Why: The training carried out in September 2007 was a follow up of the Mothers for Peace action. The 30 participants of the workshop were drawn from the women who participated in the Mothers for Peace March in Tere-ama, Emohua and Ogoni. Ten prominent women were selected from each of the Mothers for Peace locations. This interactive workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of women to advocate for peace and non-violence as well as to foster peace and better relations within and between communities in Rivers state.
Outcome: During the training 30 women gained peace building and conflict transformation skills. Subsequently, each of the participants imparted her skills to other women leaders in their communities. The women also came up with a peace action plan. This peace agenda included engaging other women in their communities with elders and youths and peace education as a key to sustainable peace. This training equipped them with skills that allow them to design peace education strategies in their communities on their own. This event also provided a networking platform for women so that they can see they are not alone in the fight to achieve a better society.
SDN continues to support Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre to achieve a comprehensive women peace platform in the Niger Delta.
