Understanding gas flaring and its alternatives

A new start is desperately needed for the Nigerian gas industry, both in its relations with its western co-partners and on the issue of natural gas flaring in the Niger Delta. This is needed, not merely for the health of the Nigerian economy in these difficult times, but also, literally for the health of its people.

SDN commissioned longstanding industry journalist Chris Cragg to review the data and explore some of the debates around gas flaring in Nigeria.

His examination of the topic has reminded us of the scale of the problems and the opportunities that have arisen from years of neglect.

SDN hopes that in coming months companies will be persuaded to be more open with their data and that government agencies can bring renewed vigour to ending gas flaring and its disasterous human and environmental consequences.
